What's happening
This bill gradually bans the use of the pesticide chlorpyrifos in New York, leading to a total prohibition by 2021.
Why it matters
Phased approach reduces immediate disruption. By first banning only aerial applications, and later restricting all uses except apple tree trunks, the bill gives farmers and industry time to find alternatives and adjust practices before a complete ban takes effect.
Addresses public health and environmental risks. Chlorpyrifos has been linked to neurodevelopmental harm in children and negative impacts on wildlife, so its gradual prohibition aims to reduce exposure for both people and ecosystems.
Agricultural transition period for apple growers. The interim allowance for use on apple tree trunks recognizes a reliance in that specific crop, balancing health concerns with economic realities and giving apple producers more time to adapt.
Signals regulatory leadership and may influence broader policy. New York’s action could prompt other states or federal agencies to reconsider their own regulations on chlorpyrifos and similar chemicals, amplifying the impact beyond state borders.
