What's happening
This bill exempts books and related items sold at school and library book fairs from New York sales tax.
Why it matters
Supports literacy and educational access. By making book fair items tax-exempt, the bill reduces the overall cost of purchasing books and educational materials, potentially making them more accessible to students and families, especially those with limited resources.
Encourages participation in school and library events. Lower prices at school and library book fairs may boost attendance and sales, which can in turn strengthen fundraising efforts by parent-teacher organizations and library foundations that often use these events to support school and library programs.
Promotes equitable access to educational resources. Exempting related educational items (like science kits and posters) alongside books helps ensure a wider range of learning tools are affordable, which can benefit diverse student needs and interests.
