What's happening
This bill requires primary care physicians to post information for parents on how to subscribe to U.S. consumer product safety recall emails.
Why it matters
Aims to increase parental awareness of product recalls. by ensuring that information on how to receive U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall emails is prominently posted in primary care physicians’ offices, where parents of young children are likely to see it.
Targets diverse and multilingual communities. by requiring that these notices be available not only in English but also in the six most commonly spoken non-English languages in New York, with additional languages provided as needed to serve local populations. This could help close information gaps for non-English-speaking families.
Leverages trusted healthcare settings. to deliver consumer safety information, recognizing that parents are likely to visit primary care providers regularly, especially for infants and children, thus increasing the likelihood that they will subscribe to recall notifications and be informed about potential product dangers.
Places responsibility on state agencies. (the Department of Health and Secretary of State) to design, translate, and distribute these notices, suggesting a coordinated government effort to prevent injuries and deaths from hazardous children’s products through improved communication.
