What's happening

This bill requires all health insurance policies in New York that cover maternity care to also cover pregnancy termination procedures.

Why it matters

  1. Ensures parity in insurance coverage by requiring that pregnancy termination procedures be covered to the same extent as other medical conditions. , so people with maternity coverage are not forced to pay out-of-pocket for abortions or other pregnancy terminations.

  2. Mandates that coverage for pregnancy termination follow clinical guidelines set by recognized medical specialty societies. , which helps to standardize care and potentially prevent insurers from imposing arbitrary restrictions not based on medical expertise.

  3. Includes protections for patient confidentiality and privacy regarding pregnancy termination procedures. , which may address concerns about stigma or personal safety for individuals seeking these services.

  4. Prevents insurers from imposing extra waiting periods or minimum coverage durations specifically on pregnancy termination benefits. , ensuring these procedures are accessible under the same terms as other covered medical services.
