What's happening
This bill requires SUNY and CUNY colleges to document, track, and publicly report campus sexual assault complaints, and conduct regular anonymous surveys.
Why it matters
Mandates a specialized coordinator at each SUNY and CUNY campus. with qualifications in nursing, psychology, or social work, to manage compliance with federal laws on sexual assault and maintain a searchable database of all complaints and their outcomes. This ensures professional oversight and a structured approach to case management.
Requires public, easily accessible reporting. of the status of sexual assault-related complaints, investigations, and resolutions through an online database on each institution’s website. This increases transparency and accountability, making it harder for campuses to obscure or underreport cases.
Introduces regular, standardized, anonymous campus-wide surveys. on sexual assault incidents at both SUNY and CUNY schools, to be administered mid-semester. This aims to capture the true prevalence of sexual assault, including cases that may not be formally reported, and helps inform prevention and support strategies.
Establishes financial penalties for non-compliance. by suspending state administrative and operations funding (but not student services or faculty salaries) for institutions that fail to meet these requirements, providing a strong incentive for schools to prioritize compliance and student safety.
