What's happening

This bill requires hospitals to provide information on post-pregnancy complications and expands maternal and newborn screening and referral requirements.

Why it matters

  1. Ensures new parents are informed about potentially life-threatening complications. for both mother and newborn by requiring hospitals to distribute updated informational leaflets, potentially leading to earlier recognition and treatment of serious health issues.

  2. Mandates ongoing review and updating of educational materials. in consultation with maternal mortality review boards, helping ensure that the information provided reflects current medical knowledge and best practices.

  3. Expands requirements for hospital screenings and referrals. so that hospitals must provide not only necessary, but also appropriate, maternal and newborn assessments and ensure patients are referred for additional care as needed, which could improve follow-up and overall outcomes for at-risk families.

AN ACT to amend the public health law, in relation to providing information on possible complications from pregnancy; and in relation to screenings and referrals for serious threats to life after pregnancy

The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

Section 1. Section 2803-j of the public health law is amended by adding a new subdivision 1-e to read as follows:

The commissioner, in consultation with any state or local government maternal mortality review boards, shall review and update this information as necessary.
