What's happening

This bill ensures that residential energy producers in New York are never compensated below net metering rates for their energy.

Why it matters

  1. Protects home solar and other residential energy producers from future changes. By making net metering the minimum compensation, the bill shields homeowners from possible regulatory or market changes that might otherwise reduce the value of the energy they supply to the grid.

  2. Provides financial certainty for individuals investing in renewable energy. Homeowners considering solar panels or other renewables can expect a guaranteed minimum return, making these investments less risky and potentially more attractive.

  3. Limits utility or regulatory power to lower compensation rates. Even if New York’s Public Service Commission restructures energy markets, utilities cannot pay residential producers less than the net metering rate, ensuring ongoing fairness in compensation.

  4. Supports renewable energy adoption and grid participation. By guaranteeing stable compensation, the bill encourages more residents to generate their own clean energy and contribute to the state’s energy mix, supporting broader clean energy and climate goals.
