What's happening
This bill expands the definition of "caregiver" to include those caring for seniors or people with illnesses or disabilities.
Why it matters
Broadens background check requirements. By expanding the definition of "caregiver," more individuals—including those caring for seniors and people with illnesses or disabilities—will be subject to criminal history checks, potentially increasing safety for vulnerable populations.
Reflects changing demographics and needs. As the population ages and more people live with chronic illnesses or disabilities at home, this bill better aligns legal definitions with the realities of who needs protection and who is providing care.
Impacts employment and hiring. Agencies and families hiring caregivers for seniors, the ill, or disabled individuals will need to ensure these workers undergo required checks, possibly affecting hiring practices and administrative processes.
