What's happening
This bill allows village boards in New York to appoint a non-voting high school senior as a student representative.
Why it matters
Provides real-world civic experience to local high school seniors. , giving them direct exposure to how village government operates and a platform to represent youth perspectives in public discussions.
Encourages youth engagement and interest in public service. , potentially promoting future civic involvement and making village government more responsive to younger residents' concerns.
Student representative can participate in all public meetings and discussions, but cannot vote, attend executive sessions, or receive compensation. , balancing the opportunity for input with appropriate limits on formal authority and confidentiality.
Appointment is optional and subject to village board discretion. , so villages can tailor participation to local interest and school district alignment, rather than mandating a one-size-fits-all approach.
