What's happening
This bill establishes escalating fines and potential registration suspension for vehicles repeatedly caught by traffic cameras violating traffic signals.
Why it matters
Escalating fines for repeat violations. The bill introduces a tiered penalty system, significantly increasing fines for repeated red-light camera violations within a two-year period. This aims to strongly deter habitual offenders by making repeated offenses much more costly.
Insurance company notification. If a vehicle is documented five times for violations in two years, the insurance company is notified. This could result in higher insurance premiums for the owner, creating an additional financial consequence that may encourage better driving habits.
Vehicle registration suspension. After six violations within two years, the owner’s vehicle registration is suspended for 90 days. This is a major escalation in enforcement, directly impacting repeat offenders' ability to legally operate their vehicle.
Exclusion of rental vehicles. The new penalties and processes do not apply to rental vehicles, focusing enforcement on vehicles owned by individuals or companies, rather than penalizing rental agencies or customers who use short-term rentals.
