What's happening
This bill requires foreign and alien fire insurance premium tax funds to be distributed to fire companies based on their number of active members.
Why it matters
Ensures fairer distribution of funds. By allocating fire insurance premium tax funds based on the number of active members in each fire company, the bill aims to better match resources with actual firefighting capacity and workload.
Incentivizes active participation. Defining "active member" as someone who participates in firefighting and is available for duty encourages fire companies to maintain and accurately report active membership, potentially boosting volunteerism and readiness.
Addresses disparities among fire companies. Previously, funds might have been distributed equally or by other means regardless of company size or activity. This change could help smaller or less active companies receive funds proportional to their contributions, potentially improving equity and morale.
May improve community fire protection. By directing more resources to fire companies with more active firefighters, the communities with greater fire protection needs or larger populations could see improved support and emergency response capabilities.
