What's happening
This bill allows the Department of Education to share cleared prospective child care employees' fingerprints and criminal records with the Office of Children and Family Services for background checks.
Why it matters
Streamlines background checks for child care workers. by allowing the Department of Education to share fingerprints and criminal records with the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), reducing redundant fingerprinting and bureaucratic delays for people seeking jobs in child care centers.
Improves safety and oversight. by ensuring that OCFS receives up-to-date criminal history information directly from the Department of Education and the Division of Criminal Justice Services, making it less likely for someone with a disqualifying criminal record to slip through the cracks.
Facilitates ongoing monitoring. by granting OCFS the authority to receive automatic updates from law enforcement if a cleared child care employee is later charged with a crime, supporting real-time risk management for vulnerable children.
