What's happening
This bill prohibits the sale of child care products for children under three that contain organohalogen flame retardants in New York.
Why it matters
Expands chemical safety for young children. By banning organohalogen flame retardants (chemicals containing bromine or chlorine bonded to carbon) from child care products for children under three, the bill addresses concerns about developmental and health risks linked to these substances.
Targets everyday items in the home. This measure impacts a wide range of baby and toddler products made with plastic, foam, or textiles (e.g., crib mattresses, nursing pillows, car seats), potentially reducing daily exposure to chemicals that can migrate out of products.
Establishes statewide uniformity. The law gives the state exclusive authority over regulating these flame retardants in child care products, preventing a patchwork of local rules and simplifying compliance for manufacturers and retailers.
Signals a shift toward safer product standards. The bill reflects growing scientific and consumer pressure for non-toxic alternatives in children’s products, potentially influencing industry practices and future legislation beyond New York.
