This bill allows semi-ambulatory individuals free access to public campsites, parks, and recreational areas in New York.
Why it matters
Expands accessibility and inclusion. by ensuring that semi-ambulatory individuals—those who have limited mobility but are not fully non-ambulatory—can access state recreational spaces without financial barriers, supporting equal participation in outdoor activities.
Addresses a gap in current disability accommodations. by specifically naming “semi-ambulatory” persons, who might not have previously qualified for free access, thus recognizing a broader spectrum of mobility challenges.
May increase usage of public parks and campsites. among people with partial mobility limitations, potentially encouraging greater physical and social activity, which can contribute to improved health and quality of life for these individuals.
