What's happening
This bill creates a $20 lifetime hunting and fishing license for honorably discharged, disabled veterans in New York.
Why it matters
Expands access to outdoor activities for disabled veterans. By offering a significantly discounted lifetime license, the bill enables more honorably discharged, service-connected disabled veterans to enjoy hunting and fishing, potentially improving their quality of life and wellbeing.
Acknowledges veterans’ service and sacrifice. The policy serves as a form of recognition and gratitude from the state, specifically targeting veterans with substantial (40% or greater) service-connected disabilities.
Potentially increases participation in conservation programs. Greater affordability may lead to higher license uptake among disabled veterans, which could positively influence engagement in wildlife conservation efforts and outdoor recreation communities.
Minimal fiscal impact on the state. The low price point applies to a specific and limited group, suggesting that the cost to the state is relatively minor compared to the potential benefits for eligible veterans.
