What's happening
This bill prohibits tinted windows in sport utility vehicles by requiring at least 70% light transmittance for their windows.
Why it matters
Closes a loophole for SUVs. Previously, vehicles with rearview mirrors on both sides could have darker rear windows; this bill removes that exception specifically for sport utility vehicles, requiring them to meet the same window transparency standards as sedans and other passenger cars.
Increases uniformity in vehicle safety standards. By mandating at least 70% light transmittance for all rear and rear side windows in SUVs, the bill aims to standardize visibility requirements across more types of vehicles, potentially making it easier for law enforcement and improving pedestrian and cyclist safety.
Impacts privacy and customization for SUV owners. The change restricts the ability of SUV owners to have darker tinted windows, which may affect drivers who prioritize privacy, reduced glare, or heat reduction, impacting both personal preference and aftermarket customization businesses.
