What's happening

This bill prohibits certain sex offenders from entering school buses or being within 1,000 feet of a school bus stop.

Why it matters

  1. Expands restrictions on sex offenders. by adding school buses and the area within 1,000 feet of a school bus stop to the list of places certain sex offenders cannot enter, in addition to existing bans on school grounds and youth facilities.

  2. Broadens the definition of protected zones. to include not just school buildings but also places where children regularly gather for transportation, addressing potential risks during daily commutes.

  3. Seeks to close loopholes in current law. by targeting scenarios (like waiting at or boarding a bus stop) not covered by existing restrictions, aiming to further reduce opportunities for predatory behavior near children.

  4. Maintains exceptions with oversight. for offenders who are parents, students, or employees, but requires written authorization from both probation authorities and the institution, balancing safety with legitimate needs.
