What's happening
This bill establishes a voluntary statewide licensing system for master electricians in New York, including a state-appointed board of examiners.
Why it matters
Creates a uniform, voluntary credential. The bill does not require electricians to be licensed, but those who obtain the license will have a recognized credential indicating they meet statewide standards for training, experience, and knowledge—potentially boosting their credibility and marketability.
Enables statewide and interstate mobility. Licensed master electricians can practice anywhere in New York State, overriding local restrictions, and may also benefit from reciprocity with other states that recognize the license, making it easier to work across jurisdictions.
Establishes centralized oversight and standards. A state Board of Examiners, with diverse appointments and oversight by the Secretary of State and State Fire Administrator, will set the qualifications, exam content, and fees, promoting fairness and consistency in who is recognized as a master electrician.
Potential to influence local licensing systems. By authorizing license holders to work statewide, the bill could encourage localities to align their requirements with state standards, and may eventually reduce the patchwork of inconsistent local regulations that electricians currently face.
