What's happening
This bill increases the minimum annual Tuition Assistance Program award for eligible graduate students in New York to $500.
Why it matters
Increases the financial baseline for graduate students. By raising the minimum Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) award to $500, the bill ensures that every eligible graduate student receives a more meaningful level of support, addressing inflation and rising education costs.
Targets aid to those with demonstrated need. The change specifically applies to students whose calculated TAP award would otherwise fall below $500, helping ensure that even those with modest need don’t receive a negligible amount.
Potentially expands access and retention. A higher minimum award may help more lower-income or borderline-eligible graduate students afford to continue their studies, thereby supporting workforce development and educational attainment in New York State.
