What's happening

This bill creates a loan forgiveness program for licensed dentists who teach at New York dental schools, offering up to $160,000 over four years.

Why it matters

  1. Addresses faculty shortages in dental education. , aiming to attract more qualified dentists into teaching roles by making the profession more financially viable—potentially improving the quality and availability of dental education in New York.

  2. Targets dentists with significant educational debt. , recognizing that high student loan burdens can deter clinical experts from pursuing lower-paying academic careers, and thus incentivizing experienced dentists to become faculty.

  3. Establishes standards and oversight for award distribution. , including competitive selection and specific teaching requirements (minimum credit hours), which could help ensure that recipients are committed educators and that public funds are used effectively.

  4. Mandates development of a standardized academic dentistry curriculum. , which could enhance consistency in dental education and ensure faculty have relevant pedagogical preparation—impacting the future training of dentists statewide.
