What's happening
This bill allows uniformed correction and sanitation personnel in NYC to choose a cash payment instead of terminal leave upon retirement.
Why it matters
Offers financial flexibility at retirement. By allowing correction and sanitation officers to receive a lump sum cash payment instead of paid terminal leave, retirees can choose immediate funds for major expenses, investments, or to pay down debt.
Could affect agency staffing and overtime. If more retirees opt for cash rather than staying on payroll during their terminal leave, agencies may face sudden staffing gaps that could increase overtime or necessitate faster hiring.
Changes financial planning for both workers and the city. This amendment shifts how end-of-career benefits are delivered, potentially impacting pension calculations, tax planning for retirees, and budget forecasting for the city as it manages larger one-time payments instead of extended payroll costs.
