What's happening
This bill requires individuals with suspended or revoked gun licenses to also surrender antique and black powder firearms to law enforcement.
Why it matters
Closes a loophole. By requiring the surrender of antique, black powder, and muzzle-loading firearms when a gun license is suspended or revoked, the bill prevents individuals who have lost their license from retaining access to potentially deadly weapons that were previously exempt.
Impacts gun collectors and hobbyists. People who own antique or black powder firearms for collecting or sport shooting would be subject to the same surrender requirements as those with modern firearms, affecting a broader range of gun owners.
Strengthens enforcement tools. Law enforcement gains explicit authority to remove these additional types of firearms if not surrendered voluntarily, enhancing their ability to ensure compliance and reduce unauthorized firearm possession.
Reflects a comprehensive public safety approach. The amendment indicates a shift toward treating all operable firearms—regardless of age or mechanism—as potential risks in the hands of those deemed unfit to hold a license, aiming to close gaps in gun safety legislation.
