What's happening

This bill directs the Department of Health and Office for the Aging to study and report on fees and charges in assisted living facilities.

Why it matters

  1. Shines a light on rising costs. By mandating a review of fee increases in assisted living facilities, the bill addresses concerns over affordability for seniors and families, potentially influencing future pricing practices in the industry.

  2. Lays groundwork for legislative action. The requirement to deliver findings and recommendations to top state leaders could prompt new laws or regulations, especially if the study uncovers unjustified or excessive charges.

  3. Improves transparency and accountability. Assisted living facilities and relevant state agencies must cooperate and share information, potentially revealing previously hidden fee structures and increasing public scrutiny.

  4. Protects privacy while gathering data. The bill ensures that any sensitive information collected will be subject to the same confidentiality rules already in place, balancing oversight with resident privacy concerns.
