What's happening

This bill requires the Triborough Bridge Authority to create a six-month cashless tolling amnesty program and mandates the MTA post its fee waiver policy online.

Why it matters

  1. Offers a significant, time-limited opportunity for drivers with unpaid cashless toll violations. to settle their debts by paying only the original tolls, with related violation fees completely waived for six months—potentially saving individuals hundreds or even thousands of dollars in penalties.

  2. Temporarily caps the maximum violation fees that can be charged above the original toll amount. (to no more than 2x the toll for 90 days, then 3x for the next 90 days), providing immediate relief from excessive penalty accumulation and making it less financially ruinous to resolve outstanding toll debts.

  3. Requires the MTA to publicly post its fee waiver policy online, increasing transparency. for drivers and the public, and making it easier for individuals to understand and access relief options for toll-related penalties.

  4. May improve compliance and trust in the cashless tolling system. by addressing complaints about unfair or confusing penalties and by giving drivers a clear, time-bound path to settle past violations without facing disproportionate financial consequences.
