What's happening
The bill requires MTA board members to attend most public hearings in order to vote on proposed fare increases.
Why it matters
Strengthens accountability. By requiring MTA board members to personally attend most public hearings before voting on fare increases, the bill ensures that decision-makers are more directly exposed to public feedback and local concerns.
Discourages absentee decision-making. Board members can no longer cast votes on fare hikes without active participation, making it harder for them to avoid public scrutiny or make decisions in isolation from riders’ experiences.
May influence fare hike outcomes. The added requirement could make board members more hesitant to support fare increases that are widely opposed at public hearings, potentially leading to more rider-friendly fare policies.
Could improve public trust. The act signals to commuters and the general public that their input at hearings is valued and that board members are required to listen, possibly improving perceptions of transparency and responsiveness at the MTA.
