What's happening

This bill requires labels identifying genetically modified salmon offered for sale in New York.

Why it matters

  1. Statewide requirement. Adds a public health law requirement to identify salmon altered using genetic engineering techniques.

  2. Packaged sales. Packaged genetically modified salmon must carry a plain, conspicuous label or marking identifying it as genetically modified.

  3. Market and deli counters. Unpackaged genetically modified salmon must have a plain, conspicuous sign nearby identifying it as genetically modified.

Who cares

  • Salmon shoppers

Labels and signs would identify genetically modified salmon before purchase.

  • Markets and delis

Sellers of unpackaged genetically modified salmon would need to place identifying signs nearby.

  • Packaged salmon sellers

Genetically modified salmon sold or displayed in packaging would need conspicuous labels or markings.
