What's happening

This bill prohibits school board members from having family members employed by the same board of education or school district.

Why it matters

  1. Aims to reduce conflicts of interest and increase public trust. by preventing school board members from participating in hiring or supervisory decisions that could benefit their family members, ensuring more impartial governance.

  2. May affect who can run for or serve on school boards. , potentially disqualifying individuals whose family members are already employed in the district, which could limit the pool of available candidates in some communities.

  3. Targets ethical standards and transparency. in local school district governance, signaling an effort to separate personal/family interests from public service roles in education.

  4. Applies only to new board members elected or appointed after enactment. , meaning current board members with family ties to district employment are not affected unless they are re-elected or re-appointed after the law takes effect.
