What's happening
This bill requires the MTA to fund and operate express bus service for Staten Island's south shore, including routes previously run by Academy Bus.
Why it matters
Ensures uninterrupted transit access. for Staten Island’s south shore communities, mandating that the MTA keep running and funding express bus routes, which are critical for daily commuters traveling to Manhattan.
Preserves and expands service coverage. by requiring the MTA to take over two specific express routes (X23 and X24) that were previously operated by a private company (Academy Bus), preventing potential service gaps or discontinuation.
Responds to longstanding transit equity concerns. for Staten Island residents, who often face limited public transportation options compared to other boroughs, potentially reducing car dependency and improving commuting reliability.
Establishes legislative accountability. by making the provision of these bus services a legal requirement for the MTA, making it harder for future budget cuts or agency changes to eliminate or reduce these routes.
