What's happening
This bill designates Long Island Rail Road fire marshals as peace officers with specific authority related to fire laws and emergencies.
Why it matters
Expands legal authority for LIRR fire marshals. By designating them as peace officers, LIRR fire marshals will have enhanced powers to investigate, enforce, and respond to fire-related incidents on the railroad, potentially improving safety and emergency response effectiveness.
Limits firearm authority. The bill specifically restricts these peace officers from carrying or possessing firearms unless they obtain the appropriate state license, addressing concerns about the arming of non-police personnel and putting a safeguard in place.
Clarifies scope of duties. The new designation and powers apply only when marshals are acting within the scope of fire-related laws and emergencies, ensuring their authority is focused and not broadly expanded to unrelated law enforcement activities.
