What's happening
This bill creates a working group to study and recommend standards and training for school resource officers in New York.
Why it matters
The bill brings together key stakeholders. including education officials, law enforcement leaders, and police training representatives—to collaboratively assess and recommend standards for school resource officers (SROs), ensuring diverse input and expertise.
It mandates a comprehensive review of requirements. for SROs, such as physical fitness, age, training, and the responsible agencies or organizations, which could directly impact who is eligible to serve and how they are prepared for the unique school environment.
Special attention is given to sensitivity training. for SROs, focusing on preparing officers to interact appropriately with school-aged children and identifying the best sources for such training, which could influence student-officer relationships and school climate.
The working group must also examine the broader implications. of any proposed standards, including civil service, benefits, and fiscal impacts on school districts, ensuring that recommendations are practical and financially sustainable for local communities.
