What's happening
This bill expands the Empire State Film Production Tax Credit to include animated short films and broadcast series/features.
Why it matters
Broadens opportunities for animation creators. By explicitly including animated short films and broadcast series/features, the bill opens up the state’s robust film tax credit to a wider spectrum of the animation industry, which previously may have been excluded.
Could attract more diverse film and television projects to New York. The expansion may incentivize both local and out-of-state animation and broadcast companies to produce content in New York, potentially boosting local economies and supporting creative jobs.
Reflects changing media consumption trends. As audiences increasingly consume animated content and broadcast series across various platforms (not just traditional film or TV), the law adapts to better support the types of productions that are growing in popularity and cultural relevance.
