What's happening
This bill allows Southampton homeowners with property split between two school districts to choose which district receives their school tax payments.
Why it matters
Empowers affected homeowners. Gives Southampton residents whose primary home is split between two school districts the right to choose which district receives their full school tax payment, providing more control over how their tax dollars are used.
Prioritizes educational alignment. Requires that if children living in the home attend a particular district (where the property is split), the taxes must go to that district, ensuring tax contributions align with actual school usage.
Adjusts tax allocation method. Mandates that tax amounts are prorated based on the value of the property within each district and set at the rate of the chosen district, which could affect the revenue received by either district and potentially the homeowner’s total tax bill.
Local implementation and oversight. Directs the Southampton town board to create rules for how homeowners make their choice and how payments are distributed, which means the practical impact will depend on local administrative decisions and may introduce new procedures for property owners and school districts.
