What's happening

This bill increases civil service exam credits for veterans and disabled veterans honorably discharged after January 1, 2019.

Why it matters

  1. Expands support for recent veterans. By increasing civil service exam credits for veterans honorably discharged after January 1, 2019, this bill directly benefits those who served in recent conflicts or deployments, giving them a greater edge in securing government jobs.

  2. Provides greater recognition for disabled veterans. Disabled veterans discharged after this date receive even higher additional credits, reflecting the state’s commitment to supporting those who have suffered service-related disabilities as they transition to civilian employment.

  3. May affect competitiveness in public sector hiring. The increased point advantage could substantially improve the chances of recent veterans and disabled veterans over other applicants, potentially shifting the makeup of new civil service hires.

  4. Signals evolving public policy priorities. Targeting post-2019 discharges shows a legislative focus on addressing the needs of the latest generation of veterans, possibly in response to changing demographics or recent military engagements.
