What's happening

This bill exempts paratransit-eligible individuals aged 80 or older from recertification, requiring only a recent physician's note for initial application.

Why it matters

  1. Reduces administrative burden for seniors. By eliminating ongoing recertification, seniors aged 80+ who rely on paratransit won't face repeated paperwork or interviews, making it easier to maintain access to essential transportation.

  2. Speeds up access to paratransit. Only requiring a recent physician’s note for a one-time application streamlines the process, potentially reducing delays for elderly applicants who need timely transportation for medical appointments, groceries, and social needs.

  3. Acknowledges the permanence of disabilities in advanced age. The exemption recognizes that disabilities or mobility limitations in this age group are unlikely to improve, making frequent reassessment unnecessary and more respectful of seniors’ circumstances.

  4. Could improve quality of life and independence. By ensuring continued, uninterrupted service, the bill helps older adults remain active and less isolated, supporting their ability to age in place and participate in community life.
