What's happening
This bill reallocates fire insurance premium tax funds, reducing Firemen's Association funding to 9% and granting 1% to the Professional Firefighters Association.
Why it matters
Shifts a portion of fire insurance tax funds from a legacy organization (Firemen's Association) to a newer stakeholder (Professional Firefighters Association), potentially reflecting evolving priorities between volunteer and career firefighters.
Allocates dedicated funding (1%) to support the well-being of professional, paid firefighters, which may enhance their advocacy, training, and benefits, and address issues unique to full-time fire service personnel.
Reduces the share for the Firemen's Association from 10% to 9%, which could marginally impact the resources available for the Firemen’s Home and related services, possibly requiring adjustments in their operations or fundraising.
May alter the balance of influence and resources in New York’s fire service landscape, encouraging more direct state support for professional firefighter concerns alongside ongoing support for traditional volunteer institutions.
