What's happening

This bill requires physicians and hospitals in New York to collect and record the school name and address of school-aged patients during registration or admission.

Why it matters

  1. Improved Public Health Tracking. By requiring schools to be listed in medical records, health officials can more quickly identify and respond to disease outbreaks or health trends that may affect specific schools or student populations.

  2. Enhanced Coordination Between Schools and Healthcare Providers. Having school information in patient records enables faster communication with schools in the event of medical emergencies, immunization issues, or follow-up care needs.

  3. Support for Student Health Initiatives. The data could help state and local agencies better target health programs, resources, or interventions to schools where patterns of illness or healthcare needs are identified.

  4. Privacy and Administrative Considerations. Collecting and storing school information raises questions about data privacy, potential administrative burdens on healthcare providers, and the need for clear guidelines on how this information is shared or protected.
