What's happening

This bill designates a portion of State Route 37 in Lisbon, New York as the "Charles 'Chuck' Kelly Memorial Highway."

Why it matters

  1. Honors Local Legacy. Naming this highway segment after Charles "Chuck" Kelly serves as a public tribute, recognizing his contributions or significance to the Lisbon area, which may foster local pride and historical awareness.

  2. Ceremonial Impact Only. The bill ensures that the designation is ceremonial—while signs will be installed, the official name of State Route 37 remains unchanged, preventing complications for navigation, emergency services, or businesses relying on official addresses.

  3. State Involvement in Commemoration. The legislation mandates the Department of Transportation to handle the installation and upkeep of signage, highlighting the state's active role in memorializing individuals and shaping the cultural landscape of public spaces.
