What's happening
This bill bans the use of lead ammunition for hunting on state-owned lands and areas affecting the NYC water supply.
Why it matters
Aims to reduce environmental contamination. By banning lead ammunition on state-owned lands and areas critical to NYC’s water supply, the bill targets a significant source of lead pollution that can linger in soil and water, impacting ecosystems for years.
Protects wildlife and public health. Lead fragments from ammunition can poison birds, mammals, and even humans who consume game meat or rely on affected water sources. The bill seeks to minimize these health risks.
Focuses on high-impact areas. The targeted ban covers both recreational hunting grounds and vital water catchments for millions of New Yorkers, prioritizing locations where lead exposure could have the broadest effects.
Encourages transition to safer alternatives. By specifying ammunition with more than 1% lead by weight, the legislation nudges hunters toward using non-toxic ammunition types, potentially influencing market trends and hunting practices statewide.
