What's happening

This bill requires a 60-day driver's license suspension for anyone convicted of two school zone speed limit violations within 18 months.

Why it matters

  1. Targets repeat school zone speeders. By mandating a 60-day suspension after two violations in 18 months, this law specifically addresses drivers who repeatedly speed in school zones, aiming to deter habitual offenders rather than just first-time violators.

  2. Heightens consequences for risky driving near schools. The suspension is a significant penalty, demonstrating that the state views speeding near schools as a serious safety threat to children and pedestrians, beyond just issuing fines or points.

  3. Could impact daily life and employment. For those who rely on driving for work, school, or family commitments, a 60-day license suspension could have major personal and professional consequences, making compliance with school zone speed limits more critical.

  4. Signals a broader push for school zone safety. This amendment is part of ongoing efforts to protect students and reduce traffic-related injuries around schools, potentially leading to increased enforcement and awareness of school zone laws statewide.
