What's happening

This bill makes it illegal for anyone under 21 to possess firearms, with exceptions for licensed hunting.

Why it matters

  1. Raises the minimum age for firearm possession from 16 to 21, with exceptions for licensed hunting. this is a significant expansion that could affect many young adults who currently own, use, or intend to purchase firearms for purposes other than hunting.

  2. Includes not only firearms but also rifles, shotguns, and ammunition. broadening what is covered and potentially impacting sporting, hobbyist, or home defense uses among 18- to 20-year-olds.

  3. Creates different legal consequences based on age. those under 18 found in violation are treated as juvenile delinquents, while those 18-20 face adult legal violations, which could have more serious and lasting legal effects.

  4. May affect familial or household gun ownership practices. families where firearms are shared or stored in homes with members under 21 could face new compliance challenges or risks of legal penalties.
