What's happening
This bill criminalizes the possession of undetectable or untraceable firearms or magazines made using digital manufacturing technologies.
Why it matters
Addresses the rise of "ghost guns". By targeting firearms and magazines made with digital manufacturing (like 3D printers and CNC mills), the bill seeks to curb the proliferation of unregistered, untraceable weapons that can evade current regulatory frameworks.
Expands legal definitions. The new language formally defines what constitutes a "digitally made" firearm or magazine, closing loopholes that previously allowed these items to fall outside standard firearm regulations.
Focuses on detectability and traceability. The law specifically criminalizes possession of weapons or magazines that cannot be detected by traditional security measures (like metal detectors) and cannot be traced, aiming to improve public safety and support law enforcement efforts to track illegal firearms.
Responds to technological advancements. As digital manufacturing becomes more accessible, the bill proactively updates the law to keep pace with technology that could otherwise be used to circumvent firearm safety laws.
