What's happening

This bill allows a 90-day extension for property tax payments by furloughed or non-pay federal employees and their partners during federal government shutdowns.

Why it matters

  1. Provides direct financial relief to federal employees and their families. who experience sudden income loss during government shutdowns, helping them avoid additional penalties and interest on overdue property taxes.

  2. Requires municipalities to opt in by passing a local resolution. , meaning the benefit isn’t automatic statewide and residents will need to check if their locality has enacted the extension.

  3. Mandates documentation of furlough or non-pay status. , ensuring the extension is targeted specifically to those genuinely affected by federal funding lapses and not broadly available.

  4. Temporary and time-limited measure. (expires June 1, 2020), signaling its use as an emergency tool for specific shutdown events rather than a permanent change to tax law.
