What's happening

This bill creates an Office of Older Adult Workforce Development to support job opportunities and address workplace issues for older adults in New York.

Why it matters

  1. Establishes dedicated leadership. By creating a coordinator role specifically focused on older adult workforce issues, the bill ensures ongoing attention to the unique employment challenges faced by older New Yorkers.

  2. Promotes collaboration across agencies. The coordinator is tasked with fostering cooperation between state agencies and the Department of Labor, potentially leading to more unified and effective workforce policies for older adults.

  3. Improves access to resources and support. The requirement for a centralized website aims to make job placement, career development, and anti-discrimination resources more accessible, empowering older adults to navigate the job market and workplace challenges.

  4. Addresses age discrimination proactively. By reviewing complaints, developing guidelines, and conducting outreach, the office will not only respond to individual cases but also identify and address broader patterns of age discrimination in the workforce.
