What's happening

This bill requires New York schools to implement a new "career explorations" class integrating academic, vocational, and work-based learning, phased in statewide over four years.

Why it matters

  1. Bridges academic learning with real-world skills. By requiring resume and cover letter writing, mock interviews, and workplace etiquette, the class aims to better prepare students for actual job searches and professional environments—not just academic success.

  2. Expands student exposure to careers and industries. The law mandates internships/job shadowing and brings industry professionals into the classroom, giving students firsthand insight into various career paths and making their education more relevant to future job opportunities.

  3. Targets both college and workforce readiness. The inclusion of SAT prep and college application guidance addresses post-secondary planning, while job search skills and internships support students who may enter the workforce directly after high school.

  4. Seeks to measure and improve outcomes statewide. By requiring performance reporting and standardized indicators, the bill aims to track the effectiveness of career education, potentially leading to more data-driven improvements in how schools prepare students for life after graduation.
