What's happening

This resolution honors Susan Johnson for her advocacy and service to LGBT people of color in New York.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the importance of grassroots leadership. Susan Johnson’s recognition underscores how individual commitment and activism can drive positive change for underrepresented communities, especially LGBT people of color.

  2. Connects health equity to broader advocacy. Johnson’s work as a PrEP Specialist and her efforts in HIV prevention link public health access directly to social justice, showing how health initiatives can empower marginalized groups.

  3. Recognizes intersectionality in advocacy. The resolution acknowledges not just Johnson’s LGBT advocacy, but her focus on people of color, spotlighting the unique needs and challenges faced at the intersection of race and sexuality.

  4. Reinforces the value of community organizations. By referencing In Our Own Voices and the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Health Center, the resolution illustrates how local organizations play a crucial role in advancing equality and supporting vulnerable populations.
