What's happening

This resolution commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Black River Regulating District for its contributions to flood control and environmental protection.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the historical importance of flood management. The Black River Regulating District was created in response to devastating floods, and its century-long work showcases how infrastructure investment can protect communities from recurring natural disasters.

  2. Recognizes the role of public-benefit corporations. By commemorating the District, the resolution underscores how state-created entities can successfully manage complex tasks like water regulation, dam operation, and environmental stewardship over generations.

  3. Acknowledges environmental and economic impacts. The District’s work has not just reduced flood risk but also improved water quality, public health, river navigation, and hydroelectric power generation, showing the broad, interconnected benefits of water management systems.

  4. Calls for public appreciation of environmental guardianship. By formally recognizing the District’s staff and leadership, the resolution emphasizes the value of sustained, often behind-the-scenes efforts that contribute to the wellbeing and resilience of local communities.
