What's happening

This resolution urges the Governor to proclaim May 2020 as Stroke Awareness Month in New York to increase public awareness and prevention.

Why it matters

  1. Raises awareness about stroke symptoms and emergency response, aiming to improve public knowledge so more New Yorkers can recognize and act quickly if a stroke occurs—potentially saving lives and reducing disability.

  2. Highlights the disproportionate impact of strokes on women and older adults, emphasizing the need for targeted outreach and education to vulnerable populations.

  3. Draws attention to the significant health and economic burden of strokes in New York, underlining the importance of prevention strategies and the role of healthcare providers in educating patients.

  4. Encourages individuals to communicate with their doctors about stroke risks and prevention, promoting proactive health management and potentially reducing the incidence of stroke statewide.
