What's happening

This resolution honors Brittany Schiavone for receiving the National L'Oreal Paris Women of Worth Award for her work supporting families of children with Down syndrome.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the impact of self-advocacy. By specifically recognizing Brittany Schiavone, a woman with Down syndrome, the resolution draws attention to the powerful role that individuals with disabilities can play in shaping community support systems and changing perceptions.

  2. Brings visibility to grassroots support efforts. The acknowledgment of Brittany's Baskets of Hope underscores how local, volunteer-led initiatives can provide critical emotional and practical resources to families facing unique challenges, such as welcoming a child with Down syndrome.

  3. Sets a precedent for legislative recognition of inclusive leadership. Honoring Brittany at the state level sends a broader message about the value of diverse leadership and the importance of celebrating contributions from underrepresented groups.

  4. Encourages broader community engagement and advocacy. By publicizing Brittany’s achievements and the reach of her organization, the resolution may inspire others to get involved in advocacy, support networks, or similar charitable work.
