What's happening

This resolution urges the Governor to proclaim June 20, 2020, as World Refugee Day in New York State.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights New York’s Role as a Refugee Hub. The resolution underscores New York’s consistent ranking among top U.S. destinations for refugee resettlement, emphasizing the state’s ongoing commitment to providing safe haven for people fleeing war, persecution, and terror.

  2. Recognizes Local and Global Humanitarian Efforts. By acknowledging the work of agencies like the International Rescue Committee, HIAS, and various faith-based groups, the measure brings attention to the many organizations and individuals—both in New York and abroad—who support the integration and well-being of refugees.

  3. Raises Public Awareness About Refugee Challenges. The resolution draws attention to the scale of the global refugee crisis, citing UN statistics and refugee admissions data, and seeks to foster greater understanding and empathy among New Yorkers for those in need of protection and resettlement.

  4. Signals Statewide Support and Solidarity. By urging official recognition of World Refugee Day, the resolution encourages collective reflection on New York’s humanitarian values and the continued need to welcome and support refugees as part of the state’s identity.
