What's happening
This resolution urges Governor Cuomo to designate November 2019 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in New York State.
Why it matters
Highlights the severe impact of lung cancer in New York and nationally,. citing that it causes more deaths annually than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined, underlining the scale of the public health challenge.
Stresses the importance of awareness and early detection,. noting that many risk factors—such as smoking, secondhand smoke, air pollution, and genetic predispositions—are preventable or manageable, and that a significant number of cases occur even in non-smokers.
Aims to boost education and research efforts. by aligning state observance with National Lung Cancer Awareness Month, which could lead to increased funding, improved screening programs, and support for those affected in New York.
Seeks to reduce stigma and inform the public about symptoms and risk factors,. potentially leading to earlier diagnoses, better outcomes, and support for patients and families dealing with lung cancer.
